needs as well, that his holiness is complemented
by his glory. The display of God in his glory
is, by contrast to the terror of sheer power, a
mitigation of that power, a complementing of
that power by an asking of worship and a state-
ment of glory. Isaiah says,

Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of his glory.

Notwithstanding his distance and inaccessibility,
the holiness of God breaks through to human
perception. The affirmation of glory is a judg-
ment upon the holy, an assertion of man's en-
counter with holiness. In the fact of the simple
worshipper beholding this holiness the earth is
filled with glory. It is at this moment in the de-
velopment of the religious sense that man becomes
aware that God may be approached and praised.
Not distance and circumspection, but the awe of
recognition and participation become manifest.
The power of the Holy and the glory of the Holy
are joined, for the distance and nearness of God are
disclosed at the same meeting, focused through the
heart of man, spoken forth as the supernal sub-
ject of man's subject. Isaiah speaks these words
at such a moment, for God is, as the Hebrew
word for sacrifice signifies, being approached.
