not restricted to the 'observables' of sense-experience. Further, at a time when we are being asked to show what it is that metaphysics and philosophical theology can have for their subject-matter when they are not mere verbiage or word spin- ning, I am bold to think that this limited discussion has a wider relevance. For I believe that the kind of situation which justifies belief in freedom and immortality, is the kind of situation to which we must appeal if we seek an empirical justification for the language of metaphysics and philosophical theology in general.
In this book, then, I approach from two directions, the one a consideration of freedom and the other a consideration of immortality, the kind of situation without reference to which the language of metaphysical theology will be logically com- promised and vacuous. So behind all my discussion is the hope that while it centres on these two particular topics of freedom and immortality it will enable the reader to see the sort of defence which could be given to many traditional concepts, whether in metaphysics or philosophical theology, by someone who nevertheless wishes to give full credit to the approach and techniques of contemporary empiricism.
