our work at Michigan which allowed me the time and support to do a major
amount of work on this book.

Dear people who supported me throughout this project, cheered me on
shamelessly, and occasionally offered delightful interludes were Judy Albin,
Beth Harrison-Prado, JoAnn Kennedy Slater, Charles Outcalt, and Sue Rankin.
Most significant was the love and unabashed carryings-on of my parents, Lois
and Sanford Lebman, as well as my sisters and brothers, Sherry and Barry Hor-
witz, Barbra and Hal Miner, Len and Carole Lebman, and my 93-year-old
grandmother, Mae Schonfield. Sarah, my demanding and otherwise annoying
cat, refuses to go unmentioned. Rose Maly and the Corgi girls disrupted my life
near the end of this project and I am grateful for their love and their spirit.
