mann in the Handcommentar, by Schanz, Wellhausen,
and Merx (Syriac text). Loisy Jésus et la tradition
primitive
stands to his Évangiles Synoptiques as Monteflore's
Jowett lectures on Elements of the Religious
Teaching of Jesus
stand to his Synoptic Gospels.

On the general study of the gospels: Wellhausen
Einleitung in die drei ersten Evangelien (second edition);
Burkitt Gospel History and its Transmission; Salmon
Human Element in the Gospels; Von Soden Die wichtig-
sten Fragen in Leben Jesu
; Denney Jesus and the Gospel;
Batiffol Six Leçons sur les Évangiles; Spitta Streit-
fragen der Geschichte Jesu
; Streeter essays in the recent
Oxford book of Studies in the Synoptic Problem,
and the older but by no means antiquated volume of
Weizsäeker Untersuchungen ueber die evangelische
Geschichte
.

Keim Jesus of Nazara (six volumes) is still the most
adequate study of the life of Jesus, upon the whole, in
spite of its critical basis. The theological aspect is
stated from different sides in the shorter sketches by
Sanday(Outlines of the Life of Christ), and Barth
( Hauptprobleme des Lebens Jesu, third edition), or in
Bousset Jesus, Piepenbring Jésus historique, and at
greater length in N. Schmidt Prophet of Nazareth,
O. Holtzmann Life of Jesus, A. Réville Jésus de
Nazareth
, and Count D'Alviella L'Évolution du dogme
Catholique
,
vol. i. Les Origines.

On the religious ideas of the gospels: Harnack
What is Christianity? with Loisy's reply, L'Évangile et
l'Église
; the second volume of Ritschl Christliche Lehre
von der Rechtfertigung und Versöhnung
; Wendt
Teaching of Jesus; 1 Batiffol L'enseignement de Jésus;
