significance in spite of any theoretical changes that may occur. Some
special topics that are covered in this text include: the relationship
between language learning and linguistic theory, alternatives to Excep-
tional Case Marking, 'quirky' Case, binding theory for non-pronominals,
VP-internal subjects, the DP analysis, the theory of branching, parasitic
gaps, Relativized Minimality and the theory of Move α, long distance
anaphora, antecedent-contained deletion, weak and strong crossover,
reconstruction and anti-reconstruction, head movement, leftward and
rightward movement and antisymmetry, and the Minimalist Program. In
addition, where possible I have pointed towards alternative formulations
of certain phenomena in other theories, although space limitations did
not allow me to explore these alternatives in detail in the text.
