THE contributors to this volume have separately acknowledged
help received from many quarters: it remains for us as editors
only to reiterate that studies of this kind (if they are judged to
be worth while) depend on generous support and collaboration
from governments, political parties, administrators, and universities.
We have received such support in full measure.

In July 1957 the Warden and Fellows of Nuffield College most
generously arranged a small conference which was attended by the
contributors to this volume and by a number of other scholars
interested in the study of elections or of African affairs. The East
African Institute of Social and Economic Research made it possible
for the only one of the contributors to this book who was not in
England at the time of the conference (Mr. Engholm) to fly there
for the purpose, and we are most grateful to Professor L. A. Fallers
(then Director of the Institute) for such generous help.
