PREFACE

I OWE and now offer acknowledgement and thanks to
many friends. I am indebted to Dr. A. G. Doughty of the
Canadian Archives at Ottawa for many courtesies and to
Mr. D. C. Harvey of Halifax, Archivist of Nova Scotia, for
helpful suggestions. Mr. W. L. Grant, Principal of Upper
Canada College, Toronto, and Professors Chester Martin and
George W. Brown of the University of Toronto, have read
and commented on the whole of the manuscript. Professor
W. J. Alexander, of University College, has read a portion of
the manuscript. My latest obligation is to Professor Ralph
Flenley, of the University of Toronto, to Mr. H. H. Lang-
ton, former Librarian, and to Mr. W. S. Wallace, the pres-
ent Librarian, for the laborious service of reading the whole
of the book in proof. I have profited greatly by their aid.

While describing military operations within the frontiers
of Canada, I have passed lightly over those in the English
Colonies as beyond the purpose of the narrative. Hence
there is only passing reference to the loyalist regiments serv-
ing there.

G. M. W.

TORONTO,
October, 1934.
