ABOUT THE AUTHOR

E (DWARD) M (ORGAN) FORSTERwas born in
1879 of mixed English and Welsh ancestry.
Having attended Tonbridge School as a boy,
he went on to King's College, Cambridge, with
which his name was intimately connected in
later years, and of which he was for a time a
Fellow. His writing, which placed him among
the foremost novelists and critics of the twen-
tieth century, is remarkable for its constant at-
tention to moral, ethical, and human values,
and also for its convincing evocations not only
of England, but also of such scenes of his trav-
els as Italy, Egypt, and India. Mr. Forster died
in 1970
