I could wish that the scope of this study might allow further
examination of topical allusions in their plays and a more detailed
consideration of the nature of their audience. I realize also that the
poverty of information on the staging in the private theatres
obscures the true appreciation of Beaumont and Fletcher's
achievement. All of these matters have given me pause. But the
need for an over-all view of this achievement justifies, I hope,
the risk of attempting such a survey.

The edition of Beaumont and Fletcher I have used for reference
is that of Arnold Glover and A. R. Waller ( Cambridge, 1905-12).
