There is no doubt that this book has been influenced by all of my years of training and work. It is most appropriate that I thank first of all Sarnoff Mednick, whose advice was so valuable to me during my years of graduate training. David Finkelhor and Murray Straus also offered invaluable help during my postdoctoral training. I particularly appreciated their broad view of violence. A great deal of this book is also due to the diligence and hard work of my editor, Susan Milmoe, who did her best to transform my often-confusing thoughts into clear and concise prose, and deserves much credit. My father, Stephen Kandel, has also been very helpful in his contributions to the book, particularly in the area of television violence, but also in a series of general comments and suggestions. I am most grateful, however, to my husband Michael, whose confidence in me and whose gently pressuring style and calm equanimity kept this project alive--to say nothing of the many hours he kept our son out of my hair. Last, but not least, this book was written for Joshua, who is the representative of a generation which I hope fervently will benefit from the effort to control violence. -- Elizabeth Kandel Englander -x- |
