closely related to the basic issue of the eastern German frontiers. Dr.
Szaz, making use of a considerably large body of source material,
including newspaper files and other references not readily available
in the United States, begins his analysis with an account of the terri-
tory and people of the Oder-Neisse provinces. He then passes to a
fairly detailed discussion of the historical background of German-
Polish relations prior to World War I. A third chapter covers the
heated controversies and spectacular developments during the period
of the Second Reich. Chapter IV deals with German and Russian
designs on Poland during World War II, and Chapter V proceeds to a
consideration of the events leading to the drawing of an Oder-Neisse
Line by the Russians. In Chapter VI, a severe indictment of the
appeasement policy of the Western Allies at Yalta and Potsdam is
drawn up. Chapter VII, a discussion of the administration of the Oder-
Neisse provinces by Poland during the post-World War II years, pre-
sents much new material and is of special interest to political scientists
and others interested in current problems. The final chapter -- which
deals with the official and unofficial attitudes of the Germans, particu-
larly the people of the West German Federal Republic; the attitudes
of the expellees, who were forced to leave their old homes in the Oder-
Neisse provinces and take up residence in West Germany; and related
matters -- constitutes a fitting climax to the entire study, and although
it is perhaps more subjective in character than other parts, it is more
than ordinarily interesting to serious students. And the extensive bibli-
ography will be useful to those desiring to pursue further study of the
Oder-Neisse area.
