It is with deep gratification that I
send greetings to the participants
in the first Festival of Oriental
Music on the Los Angeles campus
of the University of California
and to those who will attend the
event. Our faculty has worked
diligently and with enthusiasm
to prepare for the Festival, and I
share their pride in the scope of
the program that has resulted
from their efforts. It is our hope
that this Festival will be a contri-
bution to a greater understand-
ing of Oriental art forms which
are too little known in the United
States. Even more important, we
trust that the program will con-
tribute to a better appreciation of
the cultures and traditions which
produced these art forms.
