THE present book is the fruit of research I began in 1961 towards a Doctorate in Literature and Philosophy of the University of South Africa. The subjective nature of much of the literature that has appeared on the African National Congress led me to believe that an objective study, based on documents, might be useful. The material used con- sisted of the record of the Treason Trial (as the case of Regina versus Farid Adams and Twenty-nine Others came to be known) and its documentary exhibits. These are all public documents and open to examination at the Supreme Court in Pretoria, to whose courtesy my thanks are due. My thanks are also due to Mr. Julius Lewin of the University of the Witwatersrand, who kindly gave me much of his time and much valuable criticism and advice. Needless to say, I alone am responsible for all opinions expressed in this book.
