There are 130 lists in the book. All were written specifically for this edition. Even though some topics (reducing stress, managing time, writing clearly) are also included in Smart Moves and another book of ours, Yes, You Can!, we have rewritten them to reflect the special needs of top managers. For other lists, we have borrowed the expertise of colleagues whom we thank in our Acknowledgments. This material is original, having never appeared in any other form, other than in our training and motivational speaking. As in Smart Moves, in many cases we've cross referenced the advice in one checklist with the advice in one or more other lists. Look for a number in parentheses after a checklist item. Consult the list with that number for more advice on a related topic. Sometimes you'll realize that you need to consider issues in more depth before you implement our recommendations. We hope you'll develop an appreciation of how widely you can apply this book's advice, and how it all ties together. At the back of the book is an index. There we've listed the topics covered by our lists in alphabetical order. Almost all the common challenges people in charge face appear in this index, and we hope this way of quickly finding our advice will help you rise to those challenges. Totally new in this book are the checklists appearing in all nine chapters titled "Twelve Quotes Worth Quoting About . . ." These provide that well-worded, insightful, or humorous phrase that can often unlock the door to wisdom better than we can. Read all 108 quotes. You may find that they start creeping into your conversa- tions and speeches. You might post a few of them on the walls in your office. You might also find that you start practicing what they preach. Our goal in writing Smart Moves for People in Charge was to present you with a comprehensive and portable encyclopedia of executive leadership. We hope we've accomplished that goal.
