present volume is the first. The second volume, continuing the
account to the middle of the nineteenth century, is almost
ready for the press.
(4) China's policy in the northern borderlands. It is planned
to publish at least two volumes on this subject, of which the
first, by Dr. T. C. Lin, of Nankai University, Tientsin, China,
is almost ready for the press.

It will be seen from the foregoing that the purpose is to sub-
ject the imperial triangle of Northeastern Asia--the meeting
of the three empires of Russia, China, and Japan--to a series
of thorough and unbiased investigations with a view to expos-
ing the manner of expansion, the policies, and the interests of
these Powers in this region, as objectively as possible.

Professor Kuno, in the present volume, has put Western
scholarship into a position not only to understand Japan's
historical evolution in relation to the main problem, but also
to judge the conditions out of which Japanese expansion
emerged.

Each volume will consist of a monographic text presenting
the research, and translated key documents pertinent to the
investigation.

It is hoped in this way to contribute to a better understand-
ing of the greatest problem in the Far East and to give a sounder
and more objective basis on which to judge events in that im-
portant and awakening region of the world.
