*Although Joanna of Castile, daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella and mother of Charles I, succeeded her mother as queen of Castile in 1504 and remained queen until her death in 1555, mental instability prevented her from ever ruling. Spain was thus effectively ruled only by her father King Ferdinand between 1504 and 1516, and only by her son Charles I between 1516 and 1556.
