view is represented by Lenin who seeks to show how capitalism in its imperialist phase will destroy itself, and sets the corre- sponding tactical course for the proletarian. The other Revi- sionist approach is less identified with one writer, although the beginning of this train of thought is associated with Eduard Bernstein. This view would credit Marx with being an unusually perceptive economist and humanitarian who raised many of the key issues and problems of our economy and who led the social protest against the shocking conditions of the working class. They draw their inspiration from this element of Marxism, but agree with the thesis of this book that Marx has been unable to prove that the problems of capitalism are, in principle, insoluble. Re- visionism addresses itself to the solution of the problems and leaves the question of socialism open as a possible, but not neces- sarily the only or the best, means to that end.
