This bibliography is divided into eight sections, the first five of which
are limited to studies or collections of proverbs that have appeared as
English-language books. Included are sections on bibliographies, prov-
erb journals, important studies on proverbs, international proverb col-
lections that include Anglo-American proverbs, and Anglo-American
proverb collections. The last three sections list important essays that
deal with American proverbs, small regional and ethnic American
proverb collections, and studies of proverbs in American literature.

The most comprehensive investigation of American proverbs avail-
able is Wolfgang Mieder American Proverbs: A Study of Texts and Con-
texts ( New York: Peter Lang, 1989). The fifteen chapters of this book
deal with the proverb in general, American proverbs in particular,
proverbs of immigrants, proverbs current in various states, proverbs
of Native Americans, African-American proverbs, Benjamin Frank-
lin's "Proverbs," proverbs, in prose literature, proverb poems, prov-
erbs in popular songs, wellerisms, proverb parodies, proverbs in com-
ics and cartoons, and proverbs in advertisements; the final chapter
discusses the modern American proverb "Different strokes for differ-
ent folks." Each chapter includes an interpretative essay, a bibliogra-
phy, and numerous texts in context. A large bibliography, three in-
dexes, and forty illustrations are also included.
