K. L. Sharma, the chief librarian of the Times of India and an old friend, opened up the library files on various dimensions of the activities of the Hindu nationalists. At the Center, Drs. R. K. Srivastva and Harsh Sethi read various sections of the manuscript and made very useful comments. Dr. V. B. Singh was assisted by Mrs. Kanchan Malhotra in the collection and analysis of the statistical data. Various colleagues and friends in the United States and Canada also read different sections of the manuscript. Carl Lieberman and Jim Sperling of Political Science and Devinder Malhotra of the Economics Department at the University of Akron were kind enough to read some chapters and make very useful suggestions. I am especially indebted to Baldev Raj Nayar of McGill University for reading the introduction and conclusions. He helped me correct some errors in tracing the development of the two versions of nationalism in India. Craig Baxter, a friend and a colleague, was gracious and generous enough to go through the whole manuscript and made very important suggestions in improving its quality. Surender Mohan Bhardwaj, professor of geography at Kent State University, graciously prepared two maps included in the book despite his busy schedule. Mrs. Bonnie Ralston, administrative assistant in the department of Political Science, has typed many of my previous manuscripts with a great degree of patience and efficiency. This manuscript has been no exception. She skillfully and graciously typed many drafts of this manuscript and has prepared the final copy despite an increase in her manifold responsibilities. I sincerely appre- ciate her help and cooperation. Without the wise counsel and encourage- ment of senior editor Susan McEachern and her staff at Westview Press, it would have taken a lot longer to finish this project than it did. My thanks to Professor S. Dolly Malik Madan, my daughter, who alerted me to some glaring deficiencies in the first few chapters and made useful suggestions on its improvement. Last but not least, my thanks to my wife, Usha, for her help in conducting the fieldwork and for exercising patience with me during some of the rough periods. For all our appreciation to those who helped us in the completion of this project, however, the authors alone bear the responsibility for the material presented, analysis made, and opinions expressed in this volume.
