time I have been making my way, little by little, into the interior and
discovering all kinds of wonderful people and things along the mean-
dering journey.

I am still not sure what it all means, but this book is an attempt to
report my findings thus far. I hope it will serve as a useful guide to other
explorers. Although I have attempted to make this book as friendly and
as useful as possible, one should not be surprised to find unfamiliar,
even foreign, vistas now and then with an occasional patch of dense
forest. But for all that, it is an honest recollection of one who has been
there.

In addition to expressing my gratitude to all of my faithful clients and
students, I am deeply indebted to my associates for their many insights
and assistance. Also, I am especially grateful to Howard Feddema, my
senior associate, who drafted the original version of the Action Team
Leader's Guide, The Facilitator's Guide, and the protocol for unit plan-
ning; also, to David Title for his refinement of the Action Team Leader's
Guide. I particularly want to acknowledge the splendid support pro-
vided to me during the research and preparation of this manuscript by
Mrs. Jill Cook Bryan.

And I extend special thanks to Judy Wallace, my life's partner, for her
unfailing love and encouragement.
