He is also general editor of the Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers. CARL PEDERSEN is associate professor of American Studies at Odense University, Denmark and the conference secretary of the Collegium for African American Research. He has been a research fellow at the Schom- burg Center for Research in Black Culture ( 1993) and the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research ( 1996). He has coedited Voices from the African American Experience ( 1995; with Fran Hopenwasser) and Map- ping African America ( 1999; with Maria Diedrich and Justine Tally). His essay "America's Others: The Uses of the Black Underclass and the New Immigrants" was published in Social and Secure ( 1996), edited by Hans Bak at al., and "Sea Change: The Middle Passage and the Transatlantic Imagination" in The Black Columbiad ( 1994), edited by Maria Diedrich and Werner Sollors. Contributors STEPHEN D. BEHRENDT is currently a research associate at the Du Bois Institute, Harvard University. He received his PhD in History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993. His thesis was entitled "The British Slave Trade, 1785-1807: Volume, Profitability and Mortality." He is author of several articles on the transatlantic slave trade, which have appeared in History in Africa, Slavery and Abolition, and other journals. JESÝS BENITO and ANA MANZANAS teach American and English literature at the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Apart from a number of articles on African American literature which have appeared in different journals, they have written a book on James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, entitled La estética del recuerdo: La narrativa de James Bald- win y Toni Morrison ( 1994).
