acknowledgments

The exhibition which this book accompanies con-
sists of forty major works. Following the New York
showing it will travel in the United States, South
America and Europe, under the auspices of the
International Council of The Museum of Modern
Art. On behalf of the Trustees, I wish to thank the
collectors and museums who have graciously lent
paintings. In addition to lending, Mr. Hofmann
and Samuel Kootz, his dealer for many years,
gave essential help in selecting works and secur-
ing loans.

I am also grateful to those who contributed to
the book: Mr. Hofmann, for selecting from his
writings and criticizing my presentation of them;
Alice Hodges and Fritz Bultman, for biographical
data and advice; Alicia Legg, for preparing the
chronology and the catalogue; Inga Forslund, for
the bibliography; Helen M. Franc, for reading the
manuscript; Susan Draper, for the book design;
Harry Abrams, Inc., Mr. Hofmann and Mr. Kootz,
for special assistance.

Finally, I must record my gratitude to Miz Hof-
mann, with whom, for as long as it was possible,
I discussed every selection. Her eye was as sharp
as her spirit was luminous.
