PREFACE TO
THE NEW EDITION

THE FlRST EDITION of this book, which was published in
1944 under the title Dominion of the North, ended with the
Canadian declaration of war against Germany on September
10, 1939. In this new edition, I have brought the account
down to contemporary times by the addition of a chapter
on Canada during and after the Second World War; and I
have taken the opportunity of making a few corrections of
fact or interpretation in the original text.

I should like to record my thanks to my colleagues, Pro-
fessor J. M. S. Careless, who has given me the benefit of his
advice on the revision and enlargement of the book, and
Professor R. A. Spencer, who kindly permitted me to make
use of the manuscript of his forthcoming volume in the
series Canada in World Affairs.
