States Postage Stamps has been referred to for information about the
stamps listed. United States government publications also provided rich
sources of descriptive material. John P. Harrington's extensive scholarship
on the origin of state names, found in the Annual Report of the Smithson-
ian Institution, 1954, summarizes years of debate on many names and con-
vincingly discards some long-held misinformation. The Yearbook of
Agriculture, 1949 provided descriptive information on state trees. Bulletins
of the United States Museum, numbers 50, 107, 113, 121, 162, 174, 176,
179, 191, 195, 196, 211, and 237 provided behavioral and descriptive
information on state birds.
