which would otherwise have passed me by, and to the publishers
for encouraging me to pursue the subject in book form. It
would be invidious for the most part to name individual pupils,
but Mr C.T. Johnson has been of particular help in supplying me
with technical information about German keyboard tablatures,
while Mr Matthew Spring has performed a similar service with
regard to the lute repertory. I have also benefited greatly from
discussions with Dr F. W. Sternfeld, Dr Susan Wollenberg, and
Dr Roger Wibberley. Much insight has been provided by in-
dividual editors of the series Musica da Camera, with several of

typescript and made numerous helpful suggestions. Finally I
thank my colleague Mr M. B. Parkes, Fellow of Keble College
and University Lecturer in Palaeography, for his penetrating
advice at all stages, and my wife for her proof-reading and con-
stant affectionate encouragement. I am solely responsible for
any errors, whether of fact or of judgement, that remain.
