launched the art-form on new paths of development. I have tried to de- fine the contributions, whether they have consisted of deft strokes or of measures so sweeping as to have started revolutions, which these com- posers have each made toward solving the problem of blending opera's component parts; to point out the manner in which each has struck a new balance between music and drama and thus kept opera in that state of flux that is so vital to a living art. Above all, I have tried to communicate the truth borne in upon me in the course of the research that has gone into these chapters: that opera is more than the product of the genius and the artistic heritage of its makers; that it is the sum of all their experiences.
