OF SIGNIFICANT EVENTS
1950 April 25 Brazil created the state-owned National Petroleum Fleet
(FRONAPE).
1951 Aliança organized as a subsidiary of the Fischer group in
Brazil.
1953 June 27 Chilean government organized EMPRENLAR to provide
coastwise service.
1954 April 2 Brazilian government transferred the National Petroleum
Fleet (FRONAPE) to PETROBRAS.
1955 June Cement carrier Anáhuac began operations for business
venture that eventually became known as the Mexican
Line.
1956 June 22 Chile became the first country in Latin America to adopt
cargo preference.
1958 April 24 Brazil created a Merchant Marine Fund whose revenue
came from taxes on ocean freights.
summer Brazil began to organize the first shipbuilding industry in
Latin America.
1960 February 2 Santa Eliana, first all-container vessel in the world,
arrived in La Guaira, Venezuela.
February 19 Countries of region established the Latin American Free
Trade Association (ALALC).
