Finally, I express appreciation to my family for their moral support. In particular, Betty Boucher Maclay and William Maclay have shown consistent interest and confidence in my work on the project. Over the years, they have valuably modeled perseverance and discipline in tackling long and hard projects. Bonnie Maclay Schaefer has stood beside me in ways that only a twin sister could. Kara and Andrew, my children, deserve my gratitude for their flexibility in adapting to my schedule. Most of all, I am deeply indebted to my husband, Christopher, whose steady encouragement sustained me over the long haul. His unfailing moral support and practical help with our family made this project possible.
