It is a far cry from Chinese to Spanish art, but both that subject and this suffer from a dearth of good literature; and it is our belief that the deficiency in either case is mainly due to the fact that no one writer can hope to deal with the whole material. One student has mastered the architecture, another the painting, and a third the sculpture of Spain. No one ventures to interpret the evidence as a whole. Therefore, we have adopted once more our former plan by enlisting the services of nine contributors, each of whom, we feel, may be relied upon for soundness of judgment and fullness of knowledge within the compass of his own special sphere of interest. One day, we are confident, some individual author able to realize the subject as a whole will write such a book, but its appearance will not be accelerated if in the meantime we merely stand aside and wait for it. If "Spanish Art" turns out to be the forerunner of such a work, none will feel prouder than those who have co-operated to produce the essays and to collect the photographs which appear in the following pages. To these contributors, I take this opportunity of offering my thanks for the patience and skill they have expended over many months in what has been a very arduous task. Many others besides the contributors themselves have most generously helped us. So much so, indeed, that it is impossible for me to acknowledge as I should like the many kindnesses that have been showered upon us in the course of our work. It is, however, impossible for me to forget to take this opportunity of acknowledging in public, as I have already done in private, the substantial help received from Dr. A. R. Pastor, Mr. O. M. Dalton and Mr. A. Van de Put, the last having compiled the valuable bibliography at the end of the book. For aid in obtaining photographs we are, as ever, indebted to Sir Robert and Lady Witt, as well as to the Spanish Travel Bureau, Mr. A. Kingsley Porter, Messrs. Salvat Editores, the Archæological Museum, Ghent, Señor Plandiura, Mr. E. Bendir, the Institutó de Valencia de Don Juan, the Montpelier Museum, the Fogg Museum of Art, M. D. Kelekian, Sir Herbert Cook, the National Gallery, Dublin, the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, Messrs. Lewis and Simmons. Mr. Lionel Harris kindly allowed us to use many photo- graphs of examples of woodwork in his collection and, where no other owner's name appears under the plates in that section of the book, the object illustrated is in his collection.
