PREFACE

OF the many persons who have so generously contributed to my
work, I am especially indebted to Mr. A. H. B. Coleridge, great-
great-grandson of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, for permission to pub-
lish the letters. Mr. Coleridge, who controls the copyright of all
unpublished manuscripts of Coleridge, has been most helpful from
the beginning of this undertaking. It is a pleasure, too, to acknow-
ledge my indebtedness to Lord Latymer, to whom this work is
dedicated; to Professor Herbert B. Hoffleit of the University of
California, Los Angeles, for a critical reading of the Greek and Latin
passages in the letters; to Dr. B. A. Rowley of the University of
East Anglia, for bibliographical information concerning German
literature and philosophy; to Mr. W. Hugh Peal for many kindnesses
and for giving me permission to make use of his valuable collection
of Coleridge manuscripts; to Mr. T. C. Skeat, Keeper of Manuscripts,
and Mr. J. P. Hudson of the Department of Manuscripts, British
Museum, for help in the solution of textual and bibliographical
problems and for patience in answering many inquiries; to the late
William A. Jackson, Librarian of the Houghton Library, Harvard,
for expert assistance; to Mr. Robert G. Vosper, Librarian, Univer-
sity of California, Los Angeles, for granting me special library
privileges, and to Mr. Everett T. Moore, Assistant Librarian,
Mr. Wilbur J. Smith, head of the Department of Special Collections,
Mr. Jaines R. Cox, head of the Circulation Department, Mrs.
Frances J. Kirschenbaum of the Reference Department, and Mr.
David Bishop and Mr. Don Reed of the Biomedical Library for
bibliographical and other assistance; to Dr. Lawrence C. Powell,
Director of the Clark Memorial Library, University of California,
Los Angeles, and to his staff for many courtesies; to Dr. Donald
C. Davidson, Librarian, University of California, Santa Barbara,
for generous co-operation; and to the late Helen Darbishire, who
will be remembered not only for her significant contributions to
scholarship but also for her unfailing kindness to fellow scholars.

I owe a debt of gratitude, too, to the following persons: Mr. F.
B. Adams, Jr., Mr. John Alden, Professor James F. Beard, Mr. P. R.
Beaven, Mr. John Beer, Mr. Morchard Bishop, Sir Basil Blackwell,
