Preface

These essays are presented to Geoffrey Marshall on his seventieth
birthday and on his retirement as Provost of The Queen's College,
Oxford. They have been written by his friends and colleagues as a
tribute to his pre-eminence as a constitutional theorist and to his
skill in marrying the two disciplines of law and political science. In
the first chapter Vernon Bogdanor details Geoffrey Marshall's in-
tellectual achievements, but all the other contributions touch on his
work or on fields on which he has thrown light.

Those who prepared this book are most grateful for the punctu-
ality and efficiency of all their collaborators. Vernon Bogdanor
deserves special thanks for the concept of the book; so does Bob
Summers for his bibliographical labours. Hilary Walford proved
the most helpful and perceptive of copy editors. But our prime
thanks must go to Geoffrey Marshall for providing the inspiration
for all our efforts.
