seventeenth-century England, and Earlham College gave him two Faculty De-
velopment Grants for recent summers. A leave from Swarthmore College gave
Frost time for research and writing. The staffs of Earlham College Library and
of Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College provided valuable assist-
ance. Jane Thorson typed many versions of one-half of the manuscript. Claire
Shetter, Pat O'Donnell, and Nancy Speers checked numerous details. Eleanor
Stabler Clarke, Wilmer Cooper, Earle Edwards, Albert Fowler, Thomas Hamm,
Mary Hoxie Jones, Jack Kirk, Jack Sutters, Steven Thiermann, Elizabeth Gray
Vining, Richard Wood, and many Earlham and Swarthmore students read one
or more chapters and by their own research gave us insights. Earlham students
who worked on the maps were Laura Hoeckel, Tom Page, Rich Neff, Melinda
Morton, Matt Wilson, and Patrick Lacey. Most of all, our wives have been
patient for long years.
