NOTES

The catalogue is divided into two parts: I. 1710-1957, in chronological sequence; II. CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHERS, in alphabetical sequence.

All items are unique and original work unless otherwise indicated. Reproductions are noted*. If an item is printed, the date and place of publication are noted if known.

Items marked ILLUSTRATED are here reproduced, in whole or in part.

Book titles are copied in detail. Spelling and capitals are as printed. Since many of the printed handwriting manuals are of unusual size, instead of 8vo /4to the sizes are indicated in inches, and the width is always given first.

Paper or parchment is described only when mentioned by the lender or readily identifiable.

The title of professional in Part II of the catalogue denotes those who make their living or a large part thereof at calligraphy.

The cover was calligraphed by Byron J. Macdonald, San Francisco, Calif. The line cut on the cover is taken from Benjamin Foster Practical Penmanship, 1832 (no. 37).

The title page and the headings were calligraphed by Raymond F. DaBoll, Newark, Ark.
