of his daughter that the manuscript was located and placed at
my disposal.

The reading of Professor Arberry's once fine and legible
handwriting, however, proved a major task. Fortunately Dr.
Hasan Javadi, a former and loyal student of his and now Profes-
sor and Chairman of the English Department at the University
of Tehran, kindly agreed to prepare the manuscript for typing,
collate it with the original, and also annotate the translation,
following the pattern set by Professor Arberry in the first vol-
ume. Without his dedicated assistance the publication of this
volume could not have been accomplished.

This volume is prefaced by what is perhaps the most intimate
writing of Professor Arberry on his training, his spiritual jour-
ney, and his intellectual outlook. It throws light on the inner
thought and sentiments of a distinguished humanist and scholar.

It is my pleasant task to thank Mr. M. Kasheff and Dr. D.
Bishop of Columbia University, and Professor Gh. Youssefi of
the University of Mashhad for their assistance in resolving some
of the ambiguous points in the translation. The editors, however,
have not allowed themselves, except in a few necessary cases, to
alter the text of the translation, which remains basically the same
as left by the translator.

It is hoped that the two volumes, now made available, will
prove of assistance to the students of Rūmī and an incentive to
them for a complete translation of his Dīvān.
