services agency. Sherry arrived at the hospital, just hours prior to the delivery of her baby, having had no prenatal care. The hospital social worker is not sure that Sherry will be able to care for the child at home. The neighborhood where the mother and child would return is chaotic and dangerous; Sherry's house has all but been taken over by drug dealers.
Jerry R, age fourteen, has been referred to the juvenile court after a guard at a local mall found that he had taken a pair of sneakers without paying. His parents, very upset and angry with him, threaten to have him put into a juvenile detention home. However, the staff from the home persuades them to meet with a probation officer to discuss ways to deal with Jerry and help him.
In this chapter we introduce the knowledge base that is useful for social work practice with families and children, with emphasis on those that are particularly vulnerable in contemporary society, such as the families in the above examples. These include, in particular, families and children affected by poverty and its correlates, families and children from populations of color, certain recent immigrant groups, and families with issues of substance abuse, family violence, and HIV/AIDS.After considering what we mean by family, we present the following con- tent areas:

promoting child and family well-being,
•
resilience, coping, and adaptation,
•
stress, risk, and protective factors,
•
developmental perspective on understanding and working with human beings,
•
the experiences of new immigrants,
•
intergenerational aspects, and
•
feminist perspective on families and children.
We conclude with consideration of a child-focused and family-centered approach to service delivery that will be further delineated and illustrated throughout the book.
