The whole expanse of a glacier. A cold vastness of wind, snow, and ice. Ice
that is on the move, constantly creaking and scraping, cracking and
snapping, as it slowly flows outward to cover the land.

Hear the slow, harmonic progression of chords in the French horns as the
cold comes, ice forms, thickens, and begins to flow. Introduced into this
background comes a long melody by the cello. Sometimes this melody is
lyrical, as the ice slowly flows across the land; at other times it is fierce
and improvisatory, as the ice cracks and creaks, or snaps completely off at
its front to form icebergs.
