in applying anthropological concepts and methods in the analysis of educa- tional problems and processes. George, however, published his first article on anthropology and educa- tion in 1946, well before the experience with Roger Harker, evidence that his interest in educational applications started early (and stayed late). George and Louise's collaboration on anthropology and education began explicitly with the research in Germany, though Louise was in on every- thing George did long before that. Our first experience in Germany was in the fall of 1959; we went as instructors in the Stanford in Germany program and found 70 eager potential ethnographers whom we could release on the Remstal, a wine-producing valley in Germany stretching southeast from Stuttgart. We continued research in Germany; every time we went as in- structors in the Stanford in Germany program, which was often. We contin- ued with our research after the center closed in 1976, with field trips in 1977, 1981, and 1985. We have accumulated various honors, including most notably the Dinkelspiel Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Edu- cation at Stanford University, the American Education Research Associa- tion award for outstanding career contributions to the status of minority groups, the George and Louise Spindler Award for Outstanding Contribu- tions to Anthropology and Education, awarded by the Council for Anthro- pology and Education each year at the national meetings of the American Anthropological Association, the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Southwestern Anthropological Association, and election to the National Academy of Education at its meetings in Stockholm, Sweden. George continues part-time teaching appointments at Stanford, the University of California at Davis, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, at the University of California at Sacramento, and at Harvard University, as well as an active writing career. He lives with his partner and colleague, Lorie Hammond, in Davis, California. Lorie is assistant professor of Teacher Education at the California State University at Sacramento. -- G. D. S. -xx- |
