been calling in old money to make a re-coinage. A large part of the five millions from Sicily came from this source. Forbes, 59. Conv. Dolmage. The total of the private subscriptions received by Bertani's Committee amounts to 851,735 lire 28 cent. The subscription list, including sums from 1ยท50 upwards, is given in full in Ber- tani Reso. The Cavourian National Society and the Million Rifles Fund probably drew subscriptions from richer classes on the average, and were more patronised by the municipal- ities voting rates to help Garibaldi. The National Society re- ceived and spent over 1,000,000 lire. (See accounts given in La F. (Biundi), ii. 527-529.) The Million Rifles Fund, besides many thousands of rifles and muskets, supplied more than 2,000,000 lire ( Bertani Comp. p. 24). Of these two millions a large part was furnished by subscription or out of municipal rates, and another large part by the Royal Government ( Luzio, Giorn. d' It. 5 May, 1907, Finzi's correspondence). The Royal Government, through the agency of the National Society, itself secretly paid for the arms brought to Garibaldi by Agnetta in the Utile on its first voyage: since the Utile left Genoa on May 24 (see Appendix B) before the taking of Palermo, we have here evidence that Cavour financially assisted Garibaldi's expedition before its initial success was assured; Mr. Nelson Gay has proved this from documents in his possession, in his article in the Deutsche Revue, December, 1910, p. 313. -322- |
