poses an almost unbelievable number of works. Among these
are a History of the Reign of King Henry the Seventh; in
dialogue form, an Advertisement touching an Holy War; a
Preface to a Digest the Laws of England; the Beginning of
the History of the Reign of King Henry the Eighth; a third edi-
tion of the Essays; the Translation of Certain Psalms into English
Verse. The philosophic writings of this period include a re-
vision of the New Atlantis; De principiis atque originibus,
secundum fabulas cupidinis et coeli: etc. (Concerning Princi-
ples and Origins, according to the Fables of Cupid and Coelum:
etc.); Historia naturalis et experimentalis ad condendam phi-
losophiam; sive phenomena universi (Natural and Experimental
History for the Foundation of Philosophy; or Phenomena of
the Universe); Abcedarium naturae (The Alphabet of Nature);
Historia vitae et mortis (History of Life and Death); Historia
gravis et levis (History of Heavy and Light); Historia sym-
pathiae et antipathiae rerum (History of the Sympathy and
Antipathy of Things--preface only); Historia sulphuris, mercu-
rii, et salis (History of Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt--preface
only); Sylva Sylvarum (A Forest of Materials); Historia densiet rari: necnon coitionis et expansionis materiae per spatia
(History of Dense and Rare: or the Contraction and Expansion
