There are only five mills equipped with more than 100 horsepower; the
rest have less than 30 horsepower. In 1944 there were five plywood factories in Korea as a whole, the
largest of which was in the north. This plant was equipped with five
6-foot rotary machines and produced annually more than one million
pieces of 3' X 6' plywood. The main species used in the factory were
ash, maple, and oak. One factory at Inchon was destroyed during the war
and is being reconstructed at present. There are two other plants in
South Korea, having between them three 6-foot rotary machines and five
3-foot rotary machines. The monthly production capacity per machine
is approximately 150 cubic meters. Until 1944 Korea exported plywood
to China (including Manchuria) and India. Korea has a long tradition of paper manufacturing. There are more
than 200 small mills using the paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera).
Fifteen pulp-using mills have a combined annual pulp requirement of
55,500 metric tons. Only one plant in South Korea, located at Kunsan,
is equipped to produce pulp. This mill has an annual capacity of 12,000
metric tons and has had to augment an inadequate supply of red pine
by the collection of waste paper. Some pulp was brought into South
Korea by the Military Government and ECA, but supplies have been
inadequate. An excellent pressure treating plant at Pusan for ties and poles can
handle poles more than 60 feet long and 700,000 ties annually on a one-
shift basis. Shortage of creosote has, however, caused a bottleneck at this
plant. There are smaller plants in Taegu and Taejon. SOURCES FOR BOTANICAL NOMENCLATURE
