needed advice and encouragement when the project was first launched; to
Professor S. Körner for his benevolent interest and advice; to the speakers for
giving so freely of their time and energy (it was much regretted that Professor
C. S. Lewis was prevented by illness from giving the paper announced in the
original programme); and to Dr J. S. Wilders, as Secretary, and Dr A. B.
Cottle, as Recorder, of the Symposium. Dr Wilders shouldered almost all the
formal arrangements with a cheerfulness only matched by his efficiency. Dr
Cottle, with equal good humour, has undertaken by far the larger share of the
work connected with the preparation of this volume for the press. To these two
colleagues in the English Department my debt is a very large one indeed.
