Together, these chapters provide an abundance of evidence that Americans held and used the cold war schema, that the schema's predominance was perpetuated through its use, and that the schema promoted patriotism and public acceptance of U.S. foreign policy.
In fact, the Doonesbury parody was probably prompted by television newsman John Chancellor's declaration following the Moscow Summit of May 29 to June 2, 1988, that "The Cold War is over and we have won. All that remains is to declare victory and have a parade" ( Rostow, 1990, p. 133).
