NOTES

The opening quotations are taken from: Parolles's speech, IV, iii;
Kierkegaard Either/Or (O.U.P., 1946) I, 121; and Jünger diary
Strahlungen ( Tübingen 1949) 592: 'Gut sind einige Bemerkungen zu
Eigenarten meiner Sprache überhaupt. Doch bin ich nicht mit Näf
[i.e.
Hans Näf, in Die Weltwoche, Zurich, 24.10. 1941 (IX, no. 415, 5) ' Zu
[i.e. any
literary critic worth his salt], der meine Arbeit öberschaute, Einwände

( Krefeld 1948); G. Nebel:
E. J., Abenteuer des Geistes ( Wuppertal 1949); H. S. J. Becher:
E. J., Mensch und Werk ( Warendorf 1949); M. Decombis: E. J.:
L'homme et l'oeuvre jusqu'en
1936 ( Paris 1943); and E. Brock: Das
Weltbild E. J.s: Darstellung und Deutung
( Zurich 1945). Only the
last of these works is of any importance. It is a touching testimony
of a writer's essentially uncritical devotion to his hero, a book which
is informed by a genuine and profound philosophical passion, ex-
ceeding both in its claims and in its detailed arguments Jönger's
work at every important point. Brock's work reminds one of the
painstaking efforts of those restorers who, finding here a forearm,
there a few toes, devote themselves to the're'-construction of what in a
peculiar way both is and is not another man's work; to my own theme
of literary criticism Brock makes no contribution. Of the various
dissertations on E. J. I have consulted F. Schonauer Die zwei
Fassungen on E. J. 'Das abenteuerliche Herz'. . .
( Bonn 1947) and
H. Vogt Der Arbeiter. Western und Probleme bei. . . E. J. ( Güttin-
gen 1945). Of shorter essays only those will be mentioned which
have some direct bearing on my argument.
2 In Stahlgewittern was translated from the 4th German version
( Berlin 1926) by B. Creighton, and published with a preface by
R. H. Mottram in London 1929 (also 1942). In my own quotations
I have not used this or any other translation of E. J.'s works.
3 One of his brothers is the well-known poet Friedrich Georg Jünger,
another is a physicist, a third a geographer. For biographical data
I have had to rely on Nebel, op. cit.,372-375; Becher, op. cit., pass.;
Brock, "E. J.s Leben u. Werk," in Schweizer Rundschau ( Nov. 1944)
XLIV, 545-550.
4 Cf. Strahlungen372, 498.
5 Hamburg 1936; cf. 46-47.
6 'Aufgewachsen in einem Zeitalter der Sicherheit, wob in uns allen
die Sehnsucht nach dem Ungewöhnlichen, nach der grossen Gefahr.'
