voices speak to us powerfully but should not lead us to forget the voices that we
do not, or cannot, hear. The narrative excerpts included in the following chapters have been lightly edi-
ted with two goals in mind: preserving as much as possible of the narrator's in-
dividual style and enhancing readability. Excerpts are identified by a pseud-
onym for each narrator (with one exception) and some basic information.
Curtis, my father, is the only participant referred to by his real name. Each nar-
rative tag indicates the year the narrator came to Chilocco, his or her age or
grade when he or she first entered, and his or her tribal affiliation. The entry "Edgar 1929/10 Creek" identifies Edgar (pseudonym) as a Creek
who started school at Chilocco in 1929 at age 10. If age is uncertain, the grade
when school was started at Chilocco is indicated: for example, 1929/5th indi-
cates a student who enrolled in 1929 in the fifth grade. Students and employees
referred to in any narrative by name are indicated by initials. Certain staff by
virtue of their position are difficult to disguise, and they are named: Superinten-
dent L. E. Correll, boys' dormitory staff Harry Kellar, Sam Lincoln, and Rose
Daugherty; and girls' matron, Elizabeth McCormick.Material of an intimate or confidential nature has been kept confidential.
Editing followed these guidelines:
1. Extraneous interjections (uh, so, and, you know), false starts, and re-
peated words are not indicated in the text.
2. Elision of a few words is indicated by three dots, and longer elisions of
one or more phrases or sentences are indicated by four dots.
3. When necessary to preserve sense, words are added: these are demarcated
by brackets.
4. Explanatory notes of the editor are also enclosed in square brackets.
5. Braces surround comments that narrators added when editing the first
drafts of their interview transcripts.
6. An asterisk in the line of text indicates a break in the narrative, that is, the
sections preceding and following the asterisk come from separate portions of an
individual's interview(s). 16
