To only a few, among all the world's many gallant women, is reserved the
solemn privilege of being a part of the great forces locked in battle, and of
being numbered among those elect of earth who, as participants, directly
govern the course of history. The nurse, because of her special training and
the high calling to which her life is dedicated, brings to the battlefield
indispensable attributes which she alone possesses. Voluntarily she comes in
response to the utmost need of the men with shattered bodies whose cry is for
the compassionate touch of a woman's hand. In responding she nobly pays a
double price. She endures all of the ordeal borne by womanhood and in
addition she shares with man his bitter lot upon the field of battle.
