this book. It has drawn extensively from data appearing in the Institute's Global Conference Briefing Book. My earlier interest in Asia goes back to my military service in the Asiatic/Pacific theater during 1944 and 1945, my brother's service in Korea during the Korean War, his early interest and business trips to China, and to my numerous contacts in the United States with China's Lei Xiangqin, following events set in motion by President Richard M. Nixon's visit to China in 1972. As an English interpreter for the People's Republic of China, Xiangqin brought groups of technicians to the United States, and sometimes to London and elsewhere. Katie Chase was the project editor on this global-economy book. Janet Fletcher was the typesetter. The contributions of both are appreciated. -x- |
