shoplifting. Here the response in the retail industry is described followed
by the legal system's response. Deterrence as well as prevention strat-
egies are critically reviewed here. The final chapter presents the reader
with a succinct overview of the author's work.

Klemke presents a careful and insightful update to the pioneering
work of Cameron. This effort alone has provided a valuable monograph.
More importantly, Klemke's analysis and research into the phenomenon
of shoplifting has resulted in a "deviance vulnerability-shoplifting at-
traction" theoretical framework, which he presents in preliminary form
for the reader. The development of this preliminary construct will un-
doubtedly stimulate further research into the theory of shoplifting.

As Series Editor, my original expectation for this monograph has been
greatly exceeded. I sincerely hope readers of this work will recognize
the value of Lloyd Klemke's efforts to the field of criminology, crime
control, and the sociology of deviance.
