Acknowledgments

Many people contributed to the work of Left Face over its fifteen years of
production. The most important contributions came from the more than
100 soldiers and recent veterans whose words and experiences make up the
primary source material for the book. We acknowledge many of these
people in the Notes. We cannot thank everyone, though, and apologize to
those we may have overlooked.

We offer special thanks to Robert Borosage, who supported the initial
work on the book as director of the Center for National Security Studies in
the 1970s; to Robert K. Musil, fellow at the Center who assisted and
encouraged the early writing; and to Michael Mawby, then an intern at the
Center, who provided research assistance. Thanks also go to Phil Hill, Tom
Conrad, and Boykin Reynolds for research and translation services. We
acknowledge the encouragement of the late Clyde Webber and offer special
thanks to Greg Kenefick and Al Kaplan of the AFGE. Special thanks also go
to Tom Doran, and to Todd Ensign and Michael Uhl of Citizen Soldier.
Kathy Gilberd from the Military Law Task Force of the National Lawyers
Guild was helpful as well.

We are deeply indebted to Dave Harris and Dieter Brunn, who as-
sembled and maintain the GI archive in Berlin and who contributed greatly
to the writing and research of this book. We thank Ben Dankbaar, formerly
with the BVD in Holland, for extensive assistance and support and also
acknowledge the contributions of Johan Leestemaker and many other
Dutch colleagues from BVD and VVDM. Important contributions were also
made by Robert Rivkin, Patrick Silberstein, John Michael MacDougal, and
Adam Keller.

Special thanks go to colleagues at SANE in Washington who helped
with production, typing, editing, and research for the book, especially Beth
Baker, Duane Shank, Charlie Kraybill, Ellie Zogran, and John Schloerb.
