Amnesty International reports that thousands of unarmed civilian women are killed by unexpected and deliberate rocket attacks on their homes, mostly in Kabul and other cities. 23
Women are killed for being related to men wanted by the various Mujahideen groups. Others are killed for resisting rape or abduction. Many young women are abducted to be wives of Mujahideen commanders. Some are sold into prostitution. Some are stoned to death. Some just disappear. 24
Women who are working in professions, or in government jobs, are assassinated because some Mujahideen groups consider their minds to have been poisoned. Many educated women are as- saulted in their homes or offices. 25

The Supreme Court of the Islamic State of Af- ghanistan declares that women should be corn- pletely covered by the veil when they leave their homes. 26
1994
The Taliban Militia captures Kandahar in Novem- her, 1994. They immediately close all schools for girls and forbid women to work outside the house. 27
1995
September 5, the Taliban capture the city of Herat. 28
1996
The Taliban capture Kabul on September 27, 1996.
In December at least twenty women are arrested in Herat for protesting the restrictions imposed on them by the Taliban. They are sent to prison. 29
1997
In Bamiyan Province, militia groups made up of Hazara women came together to fight religious fundamentalists. They also set up a university for women, in spite of the region's extreme poverty and remoteness. 30
1998
September 12, the Taliban captures Bamiyan.
