1992-1996 Amnesty International reports that thousands of
unarmed civilian women are killed by unexpected
and deliberate rocket attacks on their homes,
mostly in Kabul and other cities. 23
Women are killed for being related to men wanted
by the various Mujahideen groups. Others are
killed for resisting rape or abduction. Many young
women are abducted to be wives of Mujahideen
commanders. Some are sold into prostitution.
Some are stoned to death. Some just disappear. 24
Women who are working in professions, or in
government jobs, are assassinated because some
Mujahideen groups consider their minds to have
been poisoned. Many educated women are as-
saulted in their homes or offices. 25
1993 The Supreme Court of the Islamic State of Af-
ghanistan declares that women should be corn-
pletely covered by the veil when they leave their
homes. 26
1994 The Taliban Militia captures Kandahar in Novem-
her, 1994. They immediately close all schools for
girls and forbid women to work outside the
house. 27
1995 September 5, the Taliban capture the city of
Herat. 28
1996 The Taliban capture Kabul on September 27,
1996.
In December at least twenty women are arrested
in Herat for protesting the restrictions imposed on
them by the Taliban. They are sent to prison. 29
1997 In Bamiyan Province, militia groups made up of
Hazara women came together to fight religious
fundamentalists. They also set up a university for
women, in spite of the region's extreme poverty
and remoteness. 30
1998 September 12, the Taliban captures Bamiyan.
