HALFORD R. RYAN is professor of English and public speaking, Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. He teaches courses in public speaking, argumentation and debate, the history and criticism of American public address, feminist rhetoric, and presidential rhetoric.

He edited American Rhetoric from Roosevelt to Reagan, which, in its third edition, is now entitled Contemporary American Public Discourse; Oratorical Encounters: Selected Studies and Sources of Twentieth-Century Political Accusations and Apologies; and The Inaugural Addresses of Twentieth-Century American Presidents. He co-edited with Bernard K. Duffy American Orators Before 1900 and Twentieth-Century American Orators. He wrote Persuasive Advocacy; Franklin D. Roosevelt's Rhetorical Presidency; Harry Emerson Fosdick: Persuasive Preacher; Henry Ward Beecher: Peripatetic Preacher; and Classical Communication for the Contemporary Communicator.
